Bayān Talbīs al-JahmiyyaIbn Taimiya

in his commentary on the Most Beautiful Names (he is also the author of the Qur’anic commentary): “It means the One to whom people turn with their needs—that is, the One they seek out to fulfil them. The expression samadahu, yasmuduhu, samdan means ‘to seek him out.’ Samad means ‘master,’ because people turn to a master for their needs. Its original sense is gathering together, as in the expression tasammada al-shay’ (the thing came together). Tarafa said:

‘And if the whole tribe gathers, you will find me
At the summit of the lofty house to which people turn.’
