they rely on their intuition and conjectures, and on the conclusions of their reasoning and reflection. They then judge hadiths against these conclusions, accepting whatever agrees with them and rejecting whatever contradicts them. As for the people of the Sunnah—may Allah Most High preserve them—they adhere to what the Book declares and what the Sunnah conveys, supporting it with clear proofs within the bounds permitted by the revealed law and established by revelation.’” He then continued the discussion to its conclusion.
The point is that although this man and others like him seek standing here by opposing the Dahriyyah, their method does not establish a refutation of the Dahriyyah. Rather, they and the Dahriyyah take opposing positions within this approach: the former speak the truth at times and falsehood at others, and so do the latter. Even their most intelligent thinkers lack clear insight into it. This stems from their denial of known truth and the claims they advance, which are false or contain a mixture of truth and falsehood. Otherwise, if these arguments were pure truth, none of the early generations or the imams would have rejected them, nor would their opponents have had a valid way to demolish them.
