Allah’s favor.’”
He discussed what they had said about the Face, then said:
“As for his statement that Allah’s Self means what is hidden concerning Him, it is as though he has neither read the Quran nor heard Allah, Mighty and Majestic, say:
‘And Allah warns you of Himself’ [Āl ‘Imrān 30],
and His words:
‘Your Lord has prescribed mercy for Himself’ [al-An‘ām 54],
and His words:
‘You know what is within myself, but I do not know what is within Yourself’ [al-Mā’idah 116].
Would it be fitting to understand this as ‘Allah warns you of what is hidden concerning Him,’ or ‘Your Lord has prescribed mercy for what is hidden concerning Him’? And could His words to Moses, ‘And I have chosen you for Myself’ (41) [Tā Hā 41], mean ‘for what is hidden concerning Me’?”
As for al-Mu’assis’s statement, “The same applies to the remaining verses,” he did not elaborate. However, those who interpreted this figuratively, such as Ibn Fūrak, said concerning His words, exalted is He:
“And Allah warns you of Himself” [Āl ‘Imrān 30]
