and in another version:
‘Mine are the night and the day; I renew them and wear them away, remove kings and bring forth kings.’
Thus He made clear that Time—which is the night and the day—is His creation and under His control, and that He renews it and wears it away. It therefore cannot be a name of His. This report was originally given in response to a particular circumstance: the people of the pre-Islamic age of ignorance used to say, ‘Time has afflicted my wealth with such-and-such,’ and, ‘The calamities and misfortunes of Time have befallen me.’ They would thus attribute to Time every occurrence brought about by Allah’s decree, predestination, creation, and ordainment—whether illness or health, wealth or poverty, life or death. They would say, ‘May Allah curse this Time and this age!’ Hence one of their poets said:
Do we grieve over fate and its vicissitudes,
When Time will not appease those who grieve?
