—that is, jibt (superstition) and tāghūt (false objects of worship). Yet if he had embraced Islam, renouncing this polytheism, and repented of these things, then such allegiance and enmity may have belonged to those earlier times. Whoever was in such a state was so before embracing Islam and repenting.
Whoever does this has a share in the words of Allah Most High:
“Have you not seen those who were given a portion of the Scripture, who believe in superstition and false objects of worship and say of the disbelievers, ‘These are better guided than the believers’? (51) Those are the ones whom Allah has cursed; and whoever Allah curses, you will never find anyone to help him. (52)” [al-Nisā’: 51–52]
Continuing to His words:
“Have you not seen those who claim to believe in what has been revealed to you and what was revealed before you? They wish to seek judgment from false authorities, although they were commanded to reject them. Satan wishes to lead them far astray. (60) When they are told, ‘Come to what Allah has revealed and to the Messenger,’ you see the hypocrites turning away from you in aversion. (61)” [al-Nisā’: 60–61]
And so on to the end of the verses.
