ʿUyaynah, from ʿAmr ibn Dīnār, from ʿIkrimah, from Ibn ʿAbbās, concerning His words:
“We made the vision We showed you only a trial for the people.”
He said, “It was a vision seen with the eyes, which the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) was shown on the night he was taken on the Night Journey.”
It may be said that al-Khallāl included this report alongside these hadiths only because of Ahmad’s statement, “The prophets’ visions in dreams are visions seen with the eyes; their dreams are not like other dreams,” and that his words “seen with the eyes” do not rule out the vision’s having occurred in a dream. For in the Sahīh collection, Ibn ʿAbbās reports from the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace): “His eyes sleep, but his heart does not sleep.” This was why he would not perform ablution after sleeping.
