To proceed: A long time ago, shortly after the year 690 AH, I was asked about the verses and hadiths concerning Allah’s attributes, in a request for a fatwa sent from Hama. I referred the questioner to someone else, but he explained that they insisted on an answer from me. I therefore wrote the response in a single sitting between the noon and afternoon prayers. In it, I set out the position of the early generations and the imams, founded upon the Quran and Sunnah, consistent with the innate disposition with which Allah created humankind and with what is known through rational proofs involving no overstatement. I also explained the duty to oppose the Jahmīs who deny Allah’s attributes, and their opponents among those who liken Allah to His creation
