Woe to you! This hadith means something other than what you have understood, for in the hadith narrated by Abū Dharr, the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—stated that he had not seen his Lord. The Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—also said, “You will not see your Lord until you die.” And ‘Ā’ishah—may Allah be pleased with her—said, “Whoever claims that Muhammad saw his Lord has uttered a monstrous falsehood against Allah.” The Muslims have unanimously agreed on this, and Allah Most High says:
“No vision can grasp Him.” [al-An‘ām 103]
They mean the eyesight of people in this worldly life. This vision occurred only in a dream, and in dreams it is possible to see Allah Most High in any state and in any form. Likewise, Mu‘ādh ibn Jabal narrated that the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—said:
“I prayed for as much of the night as Allah willed, then lay down on my side, and my Lord came to me in the most beautiful form.”
Once this account was found narrated in this way by Mu‘ādh, the narrations concerning it were referred back to Mu‘ādh’s account. This, then, is how the scholars interpret this hadith, not the interpretation you have adopted
