for one position reported from Ahmad—also held by a group of scholars—is that one should say, “He saw Him,” without saying either “with his eyes” or “with his heart,” as recorded in al-Athram’s Masā’il (Questions). He said:
“I was listening to Abū ‘Abd Allāh when a man related to him that Hasan al-Ashyab had said, ‘The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not see his Lord, Blessed and Exalted.’ He continued, ‘Someone objected to this and said to him, “Why not say that he saw Him, without saying ‘with his eyes’ or ‘with his heart,’ just as the hadith states that he saw Him?”’ A man said, ‘Al-Ashyab approved of that.’ Abū ‘Abd Allāh said, ‘This is good.’”
He said: “I also heard Abū ‘Abd Allāh say, ‘As for anyone who says that He will not be seen in the Hereafter, he is a Jahmī.’”
