Bayān Talbīs al-JahmiyyaIbn Taimiya

And going astray is bewilderment. This is because this worshipper sees that he worships nothing but his own desire, submitting obediently to whatever it commands him concerning the persons he worships. Even his worship of Allah stems from desire, for had he felt no desire toward that sacred presence—desire being the will accompanied by love—he would neither have worshipped Allah nor preferred Him over others. Likewise, anyone who worships any form in the world and takes it as a god does so only through desire. The worshipper remains forever under the dominion of his own desire.

Then he sees how the objects of worship vary among worshippers. Every worshipper, whoever he may be, declares those who worship something else to be unbelievers. Anyone with even the slightest awareness becomes bewildered at the unity of desire—indeed, at its oneness—for it is one and the same reality in every worshipper. Thus Allah has led him astray—that is, bewildered him—with full knowledge that every worshipper worships nothing but his own desire
