their degrees in seeing Him on the Day of Resurrection. I have already explained to you the cause of this. Beware, then, of confining yourself to one particular belief and rejecting all others, lest you miss out on good—indeed, lest you miss out on knowing the matter as it truly is. Be inwardly like prime matter, receptive to all forms of belief, for Allah Most High is too vast and too great to be confined to one belief rather than another. He says:
“Wherever you turn, there is the Face of Allah.”
He did not single out one location rather than another, but stated that the Face of Allah is there. A thing’s face is its reality. Through this, He alerted the hearts of those who know Him, lest the incidental concerns of worldly life distract them from keeping such an understanding present. For the servant does not know at which breath he will be taken in death. He may be taken in a moment of heedlessness, and so will not be equal to one taken in a state of presence.
Yet despite knowing this, the servant must, in outward observance and within his delimited state, turn in prayer toward the Sacred Mosque and believe that Allah Most High is before him in the direction he faces during his prayer. This is one of the degrees of the Face of the Real encompassed by:
“Wherever you turn, there is the Face of Allah.”
The direction of the Sacred Mosque is one of these, and there is the Face of Allah. But do not say, “He is here alone.”
