Mihrān, from Ibn 'Abbās—may Allah be pleased with him and his father—concerning this verse:
“And on the Day when the heaven splits open with clouds and the angels are sent down in successive descent” (25) [al-Furqān 25].
He said: “The inhabitants of the lowest heaven will descend, outnumbering the inhabitants of the earth, jinn and humans. The inhabitants of the earth will ask, ‘Is our Lord among you?’ They will reply, ‘No, but He will come.’ Then the second heaven will split open.” He continued the account up to the seventh heaven, then said: “They will ask, ‘Is our Lord among you?’ They will reply, ‘No, but He will come.’ Then the Lord, blessed and exalted is He, will come among the karūbiyyīn (angels), who outnumber the inhabitants of the heavens and the earth.”
