al-Asbahānī, who said that he heard ‘Abd al-Rahmān ibn Mahdī say to a young descendant of Ja‘far ibn Sulaymān, “Stay where you are.” He sat until the people had dispersed. Then he said, “My son, you know the deviant beliefs and disagreements in this region. All this is on my mind, and until
