Bayān Talbīs al-JahmiyyaIbn Taimiya

then it is conveyed only by the words “Allah created Adam,” as stated in several places in the Quran, since “in His image” does not address this matter. If the wording does not indicate this, then the interpretation is invalid. In either case, the claim that “in His image” means “without the natural faculties” is invalid.

Secondly, he should be told: Allah’s declaration that He created Adam and that He is the Creator is far too clear and widely known—both in the Quran and among ordinary people and scholars alike—for its meaning to require the words “in His image.”

Thirdly, he should be told: What is there in the words “in His image” that rules out these faculties?

Fourthly, he should be told: Who denies that these faculties and natural properties exist, and that Allah Himself created them and created through them? He has stated in several places in His Book that He brings things into being by means of other things, as in His words, Most High:

“We sent down water through it, and thereby brought forth every kind of fruit.” [al-A‘rāf 57]
