As for the second, examples include His words:
“These people await only a single blast from which there will be no respite. (15)” [Sād 15]
And His words:
“Say, ‘Do you await for us anything but one of the two good outcomes? But we await for you that Allah should afflict you with punishment from Himself or at our hands.’” [al-Tawbah 52]
It is clear that this question conveys negation, just as the first does, while threatening them and frightening them with what they await and expect. Thus, His words:
“Are they awaiting anything but that Allah should come to them in canopies of clouds, along with the angels?” [al-Baqarah 210]
follow the same formulation, for the interrogative particle hal unquestionably conveys negation. Another example is the saying of the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace:
“Does any one of you await anything but wealth that breeds transgression, poverty that causes forgetfulness, the False Messiah—for the False Messiah is the worst unseen thing to be awaited—or the Hour, for the Hour is more calamitous and more bitter?”
