than denouncing and censuring them for lesser matters, such as taking usury and consuming people’s wealth unjustly. It is well known that the Book and the Sunnah have never reproached the Jews for these attributes they affirm or for what they say concerning them. Rather, they censured them for attributing inability, weariness, poverty, and miserliness to Allah, as mentioned in His saying, exalted is He:
“Allah has certainly heard the statement of those who said, ‘Allah is poor, while we are rich.’ We shall record what they said and their killing of the prophets without right, and We shall say, ‘Taste the punishment of the burning Fire.’” (181) [Āl ʿImrān 181]
And in His saying, exalted is He:
“The Jews say, ‘Allah’s hand is shackled.’ May their hands be shackled, and may they be cursed for what they have said! Rather, both His hands are outstretched.” [al-Māʾidah 64]
And in His saying, exalted is He:
“We certainly created the heavens and the earth and everything between them in six days, and no weariness touched Us.” (38) [Qāf 38]
He, glorified and exalted is He, has mentioned their sins in passages such as His saying:
“Say, ‘Shall I inform you of those whose recompense with Allah is worse than that? Those whom Allah has cursed and with whom He is angry, some of whom He has turned into apes and pigs, and those who worshipped false deities. Those are worse in position and further astray from the right way.’” (60) [al-Māʾidah 60]
And in His saying:
“Because of wrongdoing by those who became Jews, We forbade them good things that had been lawful for them, and because of their frequent obstruction of Allah’s way, (160) their taking usury although they had been forbidden it, and their consuming people’s wealth unjustly.” [al-Nisāʾ 160–161]
And in His saying, exalted is He:
“That was because they disbelieved in Allah’s signs and killed the prophets without right. That was because they disobeyed and used to transgress.” (112) [Āl ʿImrān 112]
And other such passages.
