awaiting such a thing, then they would have acknowledged the possibility that Allah had manifested Himself to another messenger in the clouds, just as He manifested Himself to Moses. Yet it is well known that the Jews do not say this. As for what Allah, exalted is He, related about their asking to see Him openly, that is true. But He reported that they asked to see Him, not that they awaited it. Someone seeking a thing believes that it will occur, rather than asking someone else to bring it about. This is like His saying, exalted is He:
“Or do you wish to question your Messenger as Moses was questioned before?” [al-Baqarah 108]
As for his statement that the Jews adhered to a religion of likening Allah to creation and considered coming and going possible for Allah, the answer is this: there is no doubt that the Torah contains attributes of Allah, exalted is He, which the Jahmiyyah call likening Him to creation. It still contains such descriptions, including those he mentioned. These must either belong to the revealed Torah or be among their alterations. If the former, then what he called likening Allah to creation would be the truth revealed by Allah, exalted is He. If the latter, then denouncing and censuring them for it would have been more warranted
