Second, even if it were supposed that he had reported that something belonging to the unseen was within people’s hearts, the necessary knowledge invoked would not rule that out. For necessary knowledge rules out the presence within our hearts of things we can observe when we do not observe them there. But if we are told that angels descend upon our hearts, or that devils descend, or that there are angels at our mouths recording speech, or other such unseen matters unlike the things we observe, then being told of their existence does not mean that we know of necessity that this is not so.
Thus, someone who says, “We know of necessity that there are not two fingers within our chests with our hearts between them,” should be told: What is known of necessity is that the fingers we have observed, such as human fingers, are not within our chests. But if we were told that the fingers of angels or jinn were within our chests, we would not know that this was not so. This is akin to what is reported in the two Sahīh collections from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), who said:
“There is no newborn whom Satan does not touch at birth, whereupon it cries out because of Satan’s touch
