Al-Rāzī said: “Seventh: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, ‘The believer’s heart is between two of the Most Merciful’s fingers.’ This necessarily requires interpretation, for we know of necessity that there are not two fingers within our chests with our hearts between them.”
I reply: This hadith is recorded in the Sahīh collection. It may be discussed from several angles.
First, the apparent meaning of this hadith is not that the Lord’s fingers are within His servants’ chests. Rather, the Prophet stated that their hearts are between two of His fingers, and He turns them however He wills. The Prophet did not say that the fingers are within their chests, nor that their hearts are suspended from a finger or connected to it. Rather, he said that they are between two fingers. Saying that something is between two things does not, on its face, imply that it touches them, as in His statement concerning Paradise and Hell:
“Between them is a barrier.”
[al-Aʿrāf 46]
And as in His statement, Exalted is He:
“Would that between me and you were the distance between east and west!”
