have been among the wrongdoers (87).’” [al-Anbiyā’: 87]

And He says:

“He was indeed joyful among his family (13). He thought that he would never return (14).” [al-Inshiqāq: 13–14]

And He says:

“They follow nothing but conjecture, and conjecture is of no avail against the truth (28).” [al-Najm: 28]

“They follow nothing but conjecture and what their souls desire, although guidance has already come to them from their Lord (23).” [al-Najm: 23]

And He says:

“Or do they think that We do not hear their secrets and their private conversations? Indeed We do, and Our messengers are there with them, recording (80).” [al-Zukhruf: 80]

There is no doubt that corrupt beliefs, such as the disbelievers’ beliefs about their Lord, and the intentions arising from them, are false imaginings and suppositions. As the Most High says:

“As for those who disbelieve, their deeds are like a mirage on a level plain, which a thirsty person thinks is water, until, when he reaches it, he finds nothing there. But he finds Allah there, who pays him his account in full. And Allah is swift in reckoning (39). Or they are like layers of darkness in a deep sea, covered by waves, above which are more waves, above which are clouds: layers of darkness, one above another. If he stretches out his hand, he can scarcely see it. Whoever Allah does not grant light has no light (40).” [al-Nūr: 39–40]

This comes after His words:

“Allah is the Light of the heavens and the earth. The likeness of His light is that of a niche”

up to His words:

“Light upon light. Allah guides to His light whom He wills. Allah sets forth examples for people, and Allah has knowledge of all things (35).” [al-Nūr: 35]

And the Most High says:

“Is someone who was dead, whom We brought to life and gave light by which to walk among people, like someone in darkness from which he cannot emerge?” [al-An‘ām: 122]

There is no doubt that many people imagine and picture false forms in their minds and believe their Lord to be like them, just as they hold beliefs about their Lord
