and imagination.” For sense perception gives rise to correct knowledge, and its primary form is sight. As Allah Most High says:
“And how many a generation We destroyed before them! Do you perceive any one of them, or hear from them even a whisper? (98)” [Maryam: 98]
Jacob said:
“My sons, go and seek news of Joseph and his brother.” [Yūsuf: 87]
Allah Most High also says:
“When Jesus sensed disbelief on their part, he said, ‘Who will be my helpers in the cause of Allah?’” [Āl ʿImrān: 52]
And the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said:
“Just as an animal gives birth to intact offspring: do you perceive any mutilation in it?”
Imagination and supposition, however, are forms of belief, which may sometimes be true and sometimes false; these terms may also be reserved for what is false. How different the two are!
If he means that it is not perceived by the senses—that is, it is not seen—then this is false, as already pointed out.
The thirty-fourth argument:
He should be asked: What do you mean by the term “supposition”
