In the two Sahīh collections, Abū Hurayrah reports that the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) said:

“Allah says: ‘Whoever remembers Me within himself, I remember him within Myself. Whoever remembers Me in an assembly, I remember him in an assembly better than it. Whoever draws near to Me by a handspan, I draw near to him by a cubit. Whoever draws near to Me by a cubit, I draw near to him by an armspan. Whoever comes to Me walking, I come to him running.’”

Drawing near to Allah through righteous deeds is frequently mentioned in the hadiths. Allah Most High has said in His Book:

“Those whom they call upon themselves seek the means of drawing near to their Lord, each seeking to be nearest; they hope for His mercy and fear His punishment.”
