encompasses both the praiseworthy and the blameworthy, the terms “conjecture” and “reckoning” encompass both correct and mistaken judgments, and the term “belief” encompasses both truth and falsehood. Thus, what a person imagines or supposes may be true or false, just like what he believes or conjectures. Hence a cloud is called a makhīla, because rain is anticipated from it. In the hadith of ʿĀʾisha, may Allah be pleased with her:
“When the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, saw a rain cloud, he would pace back and forth; then, when he saw the rain, he would sit down.”
Likewise, the poet says:
“Where have you seen a rain cloud flash
And sparkle like falling drops of rain?”
This concerns imagining.
As for “supposing,” it appears in the word tuhma (suspicion), originally wuhma. This expression is used when something dubious is suspected of a person. What he is accused of may indeed be true,
