Bayān Talbīs al-JahmiyyaIbn Taimiya

by Our hands,” as He said elsewhere, “from what Our hands have made.” Rather, He stated that He Himself created and mentioned that He created with His two hands. Such wording does not admit the same scope for figurative usage as “what Our hands have made.” An action may be attributed to someone’s hand when the intended attribution is to the person himself, as in His words:

“That is because of what your two hands have sent forth, and because Allah is never unjust to His servants.” (10) [al-Hajj 10]

Allah Most High also says:

“The Jews said, ‘Allah’s hand is shackled.’ May their hands be shackled, and may they be cursed for what they have said! Rather, His two hands are outstretched.” [al-Mā’idah 64]

He thus related that the Jews had used the singular form, then said, “Rather, His two hands are outstretched,” stating that His two hands are outstretched. The singular form also occurs in several passages, as in His words:

“Say, ‘O Allah, Master of sovereignty, You grant sovereignty to whom You will and take sovereignty away from whom You will. You honor whom You will and humble whom You will. In Your hand is all good.’” [Āl ‘Imrān 26]

And His words—blessed and exalted is He:

“Blessed is He in whose hand is dominion.” [al-Mulk 1]

The plural form occurs only in His words, “from what Our hands have made.” If someone uses this verse to claim that the apparent meaning of the Quran is that Allah has many hands, despite those numerous other verses standing against it, is this not the height of falsehood? If he did not know how to reconcile the verses, it would have sufficed for him to say
