This, then, is their interpretation of janb (side). Who told you that they said it meant a bodily side? Many ordinary Muslims know this meaning, let alone their scholars. Abū Bakr al-Siddīq said, ‘Lying is incompatible with faith.’ Ibn Mas‘ūd said, ‘Lying is not permissible, whether in earnest or in jest.’ Al-Sha‘bī said, ‘Whoever is a habitual liar is a hypocrite, so beware of being one of them.’”
The explanation for this is that Allah Most High said:
“Lest a soul should say, ‘Alas for my neglect of my duty to Allah! I was indeed among the mockers.’ (56)
Or say, ‘If only Allah had guided me, I would have been among the righteous.’ (57)
Or say, when it sees the punishment, ‘If only I had another chance, I would be among those who do good.’ (58)
Yes indeed, My signs did come to you, but you denied them, were arrogant, and were among the disbelievers. (59)”
[al-Zumar 56-59]
This, then, is an account of what this soul, described in these terms, will say.
