what is ambiguous in it, seeking discord and seeking its interpretation.” [Āl ‘Imrān 7]
This is true. Allah willing, we shall discuss this verse when we reach his discussion of it. The point here, however, is that classifying these verses and reports as ambiguous is his own assertion and opinion, shared by those who agree with him. Likewise, every group among the proponents of speculative theology and the followers of caprice and religious innovation treats whatever in the Quran and hadith conflicts with its doctrine as ambiguous, and whatever agrees with it as clear.
The Jahmiyyah and Mu‘tazilah do not limit the ambiguous to what he has mentioned. Rather, they regard as ambiguous anything indicating that Allah can be seen; that He has knowledge, power, will, a face, hearing, or sight; that He Himself speaks; or other such matters. The Qarmatians, extremist sects, and philosophers include Allah’s most beautiful names among the ambiguous. Likewise, they regard what Allah has related concerning the Hereafter as ambiguous.
