Al-Rāzī then presented in his Nihāyah the third argument of those who affirm that Allah is in a direction: the raising of hands in supplication. This has already been discussed. He then said:
“Their fourth argument appeals to the apparent meaning of the verses, such as the words of the Most High: ‘The Most Merciful rose over the Throne’ (5); ‘They fear their Lord above them’; His words: ‘To Him ascends good speech, and righteous work raises it’; the words of the Most High: ‘The angels and the Spirit ascend to Him’; and the words of the Most High: ‘He is the Subduer above His servants.’”
He said: “Among the arguments they invoked to establish that He is specifically in the direction above—after establishing that He is in a direction—is that above is the noblest of directions, and therefore He must be specifically in that direction.”
