follow what we found our forefathers following.’ Even though their forefathers understood nothing and were not guided?” {170} [al-Baqarah 170]

Allah Most High has also said:

“If you obey most of those on earth, they will lead you astray from Allah’s path. They follow nothing but conjecture and do nothing but guess.” {116} [al-Anʿām 116]

And He Most High said:

“Or do you think that most of them listen or understand? They are only like cattle; rather, they are further astray.” {44} [al-Furqān 44]

Sound reason is therefore rare among the children of Adam, but its distinguishing mark is following what the messengers brought from Allah Most High. Sound reason never contradicts that. Rather, if one affirmed His oneness, one would attain faith. This is why the people of the Fire said:

“If only we had listened or reasoned, we would not have been among the companions of the Blaze.” {10} [al-Mulk 10]

They thus declared that either of these, had it been present, would have spared them the punishment. Allah Most High has also said:

“Have they not travelled through the land, so that they might have hearts with which to reason or ears with which to hear? For it is not the eyes that become blind, but the hearts within the breasts.” {46} [al-Hajj 46]
