They say:
He singled out Adam in this attribution to honour him and exalt him above Iblīs. Mere attribution is sufficient to confer honour. Thus He said of Sālih’s she-camel, [Allah’s she-camel], and, with reference to Mecca, one says, “the House of Allah.” This special attribution confers honour, although all she-camels belong equally to Allah; the same applies to houses. This case is no different.
We reply:
Attribution to Allah, when not linked to an attribute, conveys honour alone. When, however, it is accompanied by mention of an attribute, it entails affirming that attribute, without which the attribution would be incomplete.
For example, when we say, “Allah created creation through His power,” the act is linked to an attribute of Allah. This entails affirming that creation is encompassed by an attribute, namely power. Mere attribution would not itself entail that attribute. Likewise here, since the special attribution is linked to an attribute, that attribute must be affirmed. There is no doubt or uncertainty about this. This therefore differs fundamentally from what they have suggested.”
He said:
“As for His words, “with My two hands,” the meaning is “My power,” because ‘hand’ in Arabic can express power. In support of this, the following verse was cited:
So I yielded, having no power over affairs.
