to Abū Yūsuf and said to him, ‘You forbid me to engage in theological disputation, yet Bishr al-Marīsī, ‘Alī al-Ahwal, and so-and-so engage in it.’ He asked, ‘What do they say?’ He replied, ‘They say that Allah is everywhere.’ Abū Yūsuf sent for them, saying, ‘Bring them to me.’ They came to him, but Bishr had already left, so ‘Alī al-Ahwal and the elderly man—meaning the other man—were brought before him. Abū Yūsuf looked at the elderly man and said, ‘If there were any scope for disciplining you, I would give you a painful beating.’ He ordered him imprisoned and had ‘Alī al-Ahwal beaten and publicly paraded.”
