Husayn ibn ‘Abd al-Rahmān reported: “‘Umārah ibn Ru’aybah saw Bishr ibn Marwān supplicating on Friday. ‘Umārah said, ‘May Allah disgrace these two hands! I saw the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) on the pulpit doing no more than this’—meaning the index finger.”

In another version: “I saw the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) delivering a sermon on the pulpit. When he supplicated, he would gesture like this”—and he raised only his index finger.

This hadith was narrated by Ahmad, Muslim, Abū Dāwūd, al-Nasā’ī, and al-Tirmidhī, who graded it authentic. In the Sunan of [Abū] Dāwūd, it is reported from Ibn ‘Abbās
