with pointing to this imperfection as proof of his falsehood—an imperfection which everyone knows, by self-evident reason, cannot exist in the Creator, glorified be He. All these, as you see, are innovations newly introduced into Islam. They are the cause of the sects that have arisen within it, into which the Chosen One, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, foretold that his community would split.

If someone asks:

“If revelation has not explicitly told the general public either that He is a body or that He is not a body, how are they to be answered when they ask, ‘What is He?’ This question is natural to human beings, and they cannot escape it. Hence the general public are not satisfied to be told that a being whose existence they acknowledge has no essential nature, for whatever has no essential nature has no essence.”

We reply:

“They must be given the answer provided by revelation. They should be told that He is light, for this is the description Allah has given of Himself in His Book
