It may be said to you in reply: You have supposed that the Creator is to the right or left of the world, yet you have offered no proof that this is impossible for the direction itself. Both these claims are open to challenge. We do not concede that this supposition is possible with respect to the Creator, or that it is impossible with respect to the direction. Or I do not concede the combination of the possibility of the former and the impossibility of the latter: both might be possible, or both might be impossible. There are thus three possible grounds for this objection: first, that both are possible; second, that both are impossible; and third, that the direction can be to the right or left, whereas the Creator cannot. You have offered no argument ruling out any of these possibilities. We shall now explain the grounds for these replies.
The tenth point: Direction and spatial location are either existent or nonexistent. If nonexistent, they cannot be described as above or below the world. Nor can it be said that the Creator’s being above is dependent upon them, that He needs them, or anything of this kind. The argument is therefore invalid.
If spatial location and direction are something existent, then it is clear that, if the Lord is supposed to be to the right or left, it is all the more conceivable that this existent thing called spatial location and direction should be to the right or left. For if it belongs to the Lord’s attributes included in what His name denotes, then those attributes are dependent upon Him; but if it is
