—Allah—and we do not know how that is, but we believe the Messenger, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and affirm the Quran. Those who would describe Him cannot do so, and no one can set limits to Him. Exalted is Allah above what the Jahmiyyah and those who liken Him to His creation say.

Abū ‘Abd Allāh said to me: “When Ishāq ibn Ibrāhīm read the letter concerning the inquisition, he said to me, ‘You say: “There is nothing like Him” [al-Shūrā 11].’

“I replied, ‘“There is nothing like Him, and He is the All-Hearing, the All-Seeing” {11} [al-Shūrā 11].’

“He asked, ‘What did you mean by that?’ I replied, ‘The Quran is one of Allah’s attributes, with which He has described Himself. We neither deny nor reject that.’”

I asked him, “What do those who liken Allah to His creation say?” He replied, “Whoever says, ‘Sight like my sight, and a hand like my hand
