and the purpose here is simply to point out that advocates of falsehood who oppose what the messengers brought proceed gradually, beginning with what is easiest and most likely to win people’s agreement, until they ultimately demolish the religion. Some adherents of the truth also use this gradual approach when calling people to the truth, step by step, according to what Islamic law requires and what suits the caller’s circumstances and those of his companions.
