said, when he demolished al-‘Uzzā, which stood near ‘Arafāt, “O Messenger of Allah, I am astonished at my father, given his intelligence! He used to come to this al-‘Uzzā, prostrate himself before her, perform rites for her, and shave his head for her.” The Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) replied, “Those were minds outwitted by their Creator.”

For this reason, the polytheists will acknowledge their misguidance on the Day of Resurrection, as Allah Most High says:

“Then they will be hurled headlong into it—they and the misguided {94}, and the hosts of Iblīs, all together {95}. They will say, as they dispute therein {96}, ‘By Allah, we were indeed in manifest error {97} when we made you equal to the Lord of all worlds {98}. None led us astray but the criminals {99}.’”
