and more spacious? Apply this reasoning, which you have brought against us concerning how great or small the Throne is, to yourself and your companions concerning the earth and its smallness, so that you may recognize your ignorance and realize what the harvest of your tongue brings upon you. Every argument you advance turns back against you and seizes you by the throat.

ʿAbd Allāh ibn Sālih narrated to us, saying: Muʿāwiyah ibn Sālih told me:

The first creatures Allah created, when His Throne was upon the water, were the bearers of the Throne. They said, “Our Lord, why did You create us?” He said, “I created you to bear My Throne.” They said, “Our Lord, who has the strength to bear Your Throne, with Your greatness, majesty, and dignity upon it?” He said to them, “Indeed, I created you for that.”
