of any magnitude in Himself; rather, in their view, His magnitude exists only in people’s hearts. Likewise, He would have no greatness in Himself; His greatness would exist only in people’s souls.
This becomes clear upon examining his argument from several angles. First, he said: “A body must, at the very least, be composed of two substances, and this is incompatible with oneness. His word ‘One’ emphatically expresses oneness; thus His word ‘One’ excludes corporeality.”
The reply is that this implies that nothing called a body can be described as one, since you said that a body is composite and that this is incompatible with oneness. Yet this plainly contradicts the Quran and Sunnah, as well as Arabic usage. Allah Most High says:
“O mankind, fear your Lord, who created you from one soul and created from it its mate.” [al-Nisā’ 1]
It is well known that the one soul from which its mate was created was Adam. Eve was created from Adam’s al-qusayrā rib: she was created from his body, not from his soul, such that someone might claim that oneness here refers to the rational soul, which has no composition. And if Eve was created from Adam’s body, and Adam’s body is a body
