have been created; that whoever dies or is killed dies or is killed at his appointed time; and that sustenance comes from Allah Most High, who provides it to His servants, whether lawful or unlawful. Satan whispers to man, casts doubts into his mind, and deranges him, contrary to the position of the Muʿtazilah and the Jahmiyyah. As Allah Most High says:

“Those who consume usury will not rise except as one driven to madness by Satan’s touch.” [al-Baqarah 275]

And as He says:

“From the evil of the retreating whisperer {4} who whispers into the hearts of mankind {5} from among jinn and mankind {6}.” [al-Nās 4-6]

We say that Allah Most High may single out the righteous with signs that He manifests through them. Our position concerning the children of the polytheists is that Allah will kindle a fire for them in the Hereafter, then say, “Plunge into it,” as the transmitted report states. We hold it part of our religion that Allah Most High
