al-Jawāribī: they said the same, except that they described Him as hollow from His mouth to His chest and solid elsewhere. The third sect among them said that He is a body unlike other bodies.
Thus, al-Ash‘arī stated that affirming that Allah Most High is above the Throne and affirming the attributes known through revelation is the position of Ahl al-Sunnah and the scholars of hadith. He also stated that this was the position of Ibn Kullāb and his followers, as well as his own position. He described the disagreement among the sects of the Muslim community over denying or affirming these attributes. Denying that Allah is a body and denying these attributes is the position of the Mu‘tazilah, the Khawārij, a group among the Murji’ah, and the later Shī‘ah. Affirming that He is a body and affirming these attributes is the position of the majority of the early Imāmīs, a group among the Murji’ah, and others.
