Hilm Mu'awiyaIbn Abi al-Dunya

30 – With his chain of transmission he said: A young man from Quraysh came to Muʿāwiyah, but ʿUbayd, the doorkeeper, kept him outside. After the doorkeeper had rebuffed him several times at the entrance, the youth stepped up to him; ʿUbayd spoke to him harshly, so the young man struck him. The doorkeeper then went in to Muʿāwiyah wearing a shirt smeared with blood. Muʿāwiyah grew so angry that it showed on his face, yet he remained silent for a long while. Finally he raised his head and said to the doorkeeper, “Go; for having the power to punish removes resentment”—meaning anger itself.
