25 – With his chain of transmission he relates: Muʿāwiyah was once presented with some velvet cloaks, so he distributed them among the people of Syria. He gave one elderly man ⦗28⦘ a single cloak, and the man took umbrage at this, swearing that he would strike Muʿāwiyah on the head with it. When Muʿāwiyah heard of it he said, “Let him fulfil his vow—but let one elder be gentle with another.”
