22 – Through his chain of transmission he relates that ʿAmr ibn al-ʿĀṣ said to ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿAbbās: “O descendants of Hāshim, by Allah, you have hung the murder of ʿUthmān around your necks like the gaudy necklaces worn by flirtatious slave-girls. You obeyed the profligates of Iraq when they vilified him, delivered him to the blood-shedders from Egypt, and sheltered his assassins. All people looked to Quraysh, Quraysh looked to the clan of ʿAbd Manāf, and the clan of ʿAbd Manāf looked to the sons of Hāshim.” ⦗26⦘
ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿAbbās replied to Muʿāwiyah: “Muʿāwiyah, ʿAmr has spoken only with your consent, yet you two are the very last who should speak about ʿUthmān. As for you, Muʿāwiyah, you kept encouraging him in what he was doing; but when he was besieged and sought your aid you stalled, cherished the prospect of his killers, and waited for events to unfold. And as for you, ʿAmr, you stirred up Medina against him, then fled to Palestine inquiring after his fate. When news of his death reached you, your hostility toward ʿAlī left you no alternative but to join Muʿāwiyah, selling your religion to him for Egypt.”
Muʿāwiyah said, “Enough—may Allah have mercy on you. ʿAmr has exposed me to you and exposed himself; may he receive no good recompense for such kinship.”
