19 – With his chain of transmission, al-Mughīrah reported: When word of ʿAlī’s death reached Muʿāwiyah, he was taking his midday rest with his wife—the daughter of Qurazah—on a scorching summer day. He exclaimed, “Indeed, we belong to Allah, and to Him we shall return! How much knowledge, forbearance, virtue, and understanding of the law has been lost!” His wife objected, “Only yesterday you were striking at his very eyes, and today you recite the istirjāʿ for him?” He replied, “Shame on you! You do not realize what knowledge, merit, and hard-won precedence they have now been deprived of.”
