18 – With his chain of transmission he relates: Saʿd ibn Abī Waqqāṣ entered upon Muʿāwiyah, offered the greeting of peace, but did not add “Commander of the Faithful.” Muʿāwiyah said to him, “Had you wished to call me by another title, you would have done so.” Saʿd replied, “We are the believers, yet we never appointed you our commander. It seems you are quite taken with the post you hold, Muʿāwiyah! By Allah, I would not wish to be in your position, even if all I had spilled were a single cupping-glass of blood.” Muʿāwiyah answered, “As for me—and for your cousin ʿAlī as well, O Abū Isḥāq—we have shed far more than one or two such cupfuls. Come, sit here with me on the couch.”
