16 – Through his chain of transmission, from Sufyān ibn ʿUyaynah, who said: While Muʿāwiyah was traveling on the road to Mecca he nodded off upon his mount. ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Zubayr caught up with him and said, “You fall asleep while I am beside you? Are you not afraid I might kill you?” Muʿāwiyah answered, “You are no slayer of kings; every bird only captures what lies within its reach. You, Ibn al-Zubayr, are nothing but a wily fox, slipping into one hole and out of another. By God, I can almost see you already tethered like a kid goat. Would that I were alive then to set you free—though what a sorry rescuer I would be.”
