9 – With his chain of transmission: when the news of Muʿāwiyah’s death reached Ibn ʿAbbās and the meal was laid out before him, he told his servant, “Remove it, remove it.” Then he prayed, “O Allah, You are more expansive in mercy toward Muʿāwiyah.” After that he said, “He was better than those who will come after him, and worse than those who came before him.” Then he recited:

A mountain trembled, then with all its weight it leaned—
Into the sea, and no ocean could mend what it had seen.
