and Fāṭimah, al-Ḥasan, and al-Ḥusayn—at the mere mention of their names faces would darken, eyes would grow hostile, and hearts would seethe with resentment. Should anyone recite the Prophet’s words, “For whomever I am his patron, ʿAlī is his patron,” or, “You stand in relation to me as Aaron stood to Moses,” and the like, they immediately set about seeking ways to undermine them.
