arises from them in the form of wondrous deeds and extraordinary effects come from anything but spirits, which wield bodies as a craftsman wields his tools? The workmanship is truly his; the tools are merely the means by which his influence reaches what he makes.
Anyone with even a little discernment who reflects on the conditions of the world, and whose spirit has become refined and witnessed the states of spirits, their effects, how they move bodies and how bodies respond to them—all by the decree of the Almighty, the All-Knowing, the Creator of causes and their effects—will see wonders in creation and signs indicating Allah’s oneness and the greatness of His lordship. He will see that there is another realm governed by different laws, whose effects are witnessed while their causes remain hidden from sight.
So blessed is Allah, Lord of all worlds and the best of creators, who has perfected what He has made and made excellent everything He has created.
The realm of bodies bears no comparison to the realm of spirits: the latter is greater and vaster, its wonders more dazzling and its signs more astonishing.
Consider this human frame when the spirit leaves it: how does it become like a piece of wood or a lump of flesh? Where have all that learning, knowledge and intellect gone, all those remarkable skills, wondrous deeds, thoughts and plans?
How have they all departed with the spirit, leaving the frame no different from dust? What is it in a person that speaks to you, sees you, loves you, befriends you or opposes you; whose company you find pleasant or burdensome, comforting or unsettling—is it not that reality beyond the frame visible to the eye?
Many a man of massive build and large body sits lightly upon your heart and is pleasant to you. Another, delicately built and small in body, weighs more heavily upon your heart than a mountain. This is only because of the refinement, lightness and sweetness of the former’s spirit, and the coarseness, roughness and bitterness of the latter’s.
In short, attachments and bonds between people, as well as aversion and estrangement, belong primarily to spirits, and only secondarily to bodies.
