His words, peace and blessings be upon him, “That will indeed come to pass,” may mean either that such blessings will come to you, or that you will be questioned about them. Even dates and water are among these blessings.
This is supported by his words, peace and blessings be upon him, in the authentic hadith, after they had eaten fresh dates and meat with him and drunk cool water:
“This is among the blessings about which you will be questioned on the Day of Resurrection.”
This questioning concerns gratitude for those blessings and fulfilling what is due for them.
Al-Tirmidhī also relates from Anas that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said:
“A servant will be brought on the Day of Resurrection like a lamb «1» and made to stand before Allah Most High. Allah will say, ‘I gave to you, entrusted you with possessions, and bestowed blessings upon you. What did you do?’ He will reply, ‘My Lord, I accumulated it and increased it, then left it behind more abundant than ever. Send me back, and I will bring it to You.’ When he is brought back, he will have sent no good ahead, and he will be taken to the Fire.” «2»
It also contains a report from Abū Saʿīd and Abū Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with them both, who said that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:
“A servant will be brought on the Day of Resurrection, and Allah will say, ‘Did I not give you hearing, sight, wealth, and children; place livestock and crops at your service; and leave you to lead others and enjoy yourself freely? Did you think you would ever face this Day of yours?’ He will reply, ‘No.’ He will then say to him, ‘Today I shall forget you, just as you forgot Me.’”
Al-Tirmidhī said: “This is an authentic hadith.”
A group of Quran commentators have maintained that this address applies exclusively to the disbelievers, and that they alone will be questioned about blessings. They attributed this view to al-Hasan and Muqātil. Al-Wāhidī also adopted it.
He cited as evidence the report of Abū Bakr: “When this verse was revealed, the Messenger of Allah said, ‘Consider the meal I ate with you at the house of Abū al-Haytham ibn al-Tayyihān, consisting of barley bread and meat,
